Group 4 Project Planning Day Reflection

Angela Hai, Apr. 9

Our group’s research topic is to discover the relationship between the difference of surface tension and the velocity of the ship. We find this intriguing idea in a famous science fiction, Three Bodies, written by Cixin Liu. Some says using surface tension as energy source is unreliable while others stoutly believe the validity of this statement. Thus, in this project, we’d like to test the feasibility of it. The subject we are going to explore is closely related to the warp engine ship (driving devices in a liquid condition), which has a promising future. We have a distinct division of works to increase efficiency. Surface tension is a well-known term of Physics; thus, Jenny and I may explain it in a physics aspect. Lilian will mainly focus on the choices of solution and help with her Biology knowledge. For Bryan, he may use his understanding in CS to create the final video and presentation. With our contribution, our experiment is deliberately designed: we have reliable dependent and independent variables, clear purpose, and well-prepared material lists. The four of us have worked together smoothly so far: each of us feels a sense of belonging and feels that hir or her skills are valued. The main challenge may be the measuring of surface tension, which has a great uncertainty and hard to determine. To deal with this problem, we designed Plan A and Plan B to ensure that at least one of them is going to work and we are able to get the surface tension of different solutions. Overall, everything is carried out smoothly so far.
