Mr. Fitzroy the Household Projector is an independent speculative product design, aiming to explore possible combinations of retro-styled film projector and a whole new operation logic. The two spinning disks on the left wheel represent the time of the film being played, and the right wheel represents the speed. Users can pause, play, speed up or even reverse the film by manipulating these wheels. This project was built with Blender. I harvested skills in topology and rendering through the process.

Problem Statement
After playing Arknight’s event themed in the Space Race era, I was highly inspired by the visual aesthetics of modernism and decided to develop a project. I want to keep the outlines of old industrial products and give them new interactive operations. I also want to provide them with personalities and human names to emphasize the narrative aspect. The first piece of product in the series is a projector, inspired by the “old projector shaped” video icon in modern iconography system. There’s an interesting statement on the internet, saying the new generation born in the digital age will wonder why the icon of the “phone” app is a weird semi-circle with a hollow in the middle. Similarly, people who haven’t seen a old video camera will not understand why the video icon is designed like that, with two circles on a rectangle. I decided to design a projector in the shape of an old projector, but giving it new interactions.
